Waimea fire displaces four

WAIMEA — Four people were displaced following a house fire early Saturday morning on Alawai Road in Waimea.

No injuries were reported, and according to a county release the displaced individuals were assisted by volunteers with the American Red Cross Kaua‘i Chapter.

The blaze was reported at approximately 2:20 a.m., with personnel from the Waimea, Hanapepe, Kalaheo and Lihu‘e fire stations responding to the structure fire to a one-story dwelling in Waimea. They were joined by the Fire Prevention Bureau, battalion chief, Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative, Kaua‘i Police Department and the American Red Cross Kaua‘i Chapter.

On arrival, fire personnel met the dwelling fully engulfed in flames. Occupants of the building were home at the time, and fire crews established a water supply via a fire hydrant before proceeding with extinguishing efforts.

The fire was contained at approximately 2:40 a.m., with damages estimated at $400,000.

Once contained, KIUC personnel proceeded to shut off power to the dwelling, and fire personnel methodically extinguished any remaining hot spots.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
