Warriors advance to title game with a shutout win over Seabury Hall

WAIPAHU — For the second-consecutive season, the Kapa‘a Warriors’ soccer team has advanced to the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Queen’s Medical Center Division II Boys Soccer championship game, versus Hawai‘i Island’s Hawai‘i Prepatory Academy today at 5 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.

The Warriors advanced to the championship game, toppling Seabury Hall of Maui 3-0 in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon.

The game was tied at halftime when Warriors’ coach Kevin Cram and his assistant coaches discussed their team’s performance.

“We didn’t make any changes, we just told them that they could score, and they would need to do that to move on,” Cram said in a post-game phone interview with The Garden Island. “We told them they had to make that happen, and they did step up, and they got the ball in the net with a little inspiration.”

The Warriors, who are attempting to win their second-consecutive DII soccer championship, scored the majority of their goals late, ending the stalemate.

Kellen O’Rourke scored at the 57th-minute, and Keanu Brown scored three minutes later. La‘akea Gonsalves scored in the 67th minute mark.

Getting ready for HPA

In the last two seasons, HPA excelled in Division I, before moving this season to Division II.

Two years ago, HPA was state co-champion in Division I, and that was because the game was canceled because of weather-related concerns.

According to Cram, HPA plays a similar style as their first-round opponen.

The Division II championship game the Warriors will play in will be broadcast live on channel 16 on the Spectrum Cable system at 5 p.m.

Cram said he is excited about his team’s prospects.

“They have a solid team, and we have to be able to come out ahead,” Cram said.

“We have one more game to make it happen, and we haven’t done that and, hopefully, it would be a great accomplishment if we can get that done.”
