Warriors, Voyagers split tennis

PUHI — The Kapaa High School girls took a 4-1 win over Island School and the Voyagers bounced back on the boys’ courts for a 3-2 edge Saturday afternoon during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation tennis matches at Kauai Community College.

No results from the Kauai High School at Waimea High School courts were available at press time.

At the Puhi college courts, Island School’s Haven Sadler, playing on the Girls First Singles floor, outlasted Kapaa’s Sydney Nice, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 for the Voyagers’ sole win on the girls courts.

Kapaa redeemed that blemish when Kiara Dolino got past Island School’s Bonnie Lee, 6-1, 7-5 on the Girls Second Singles court.

The wins continued onto the doubles floor when the Warrior duo of Leila Nelson and Hannah Collins-Doijode downed the Voyager pair of Kalia Hamid and Lily Reynolds, 6-1, 6-0 on the Girls First Doubles floor.

Warriors Mary Jane Uribe and Wailana Makepa defeated the Voyager pair of Ava Anderton and Paulina Do, 6-2, 6-2 on the Girls Second Doubles arena, and a 6-0, 6-3 win by Kapaa’s Analani Bacon and Ruby Jane Udaundo over Voyagers Melina Ventura and Alexa Lauryn completed the Kapaa girls’ win.

On the boys floor, Kapaa’s Mason Buick downed Voyager Reed Brown, 6-4, 6-1 on the Boys First Singles court, Brown moving up from the ranks of Second Singles last week where he fell to Kauai’s Kai Villanueva.

Kapaa’s Thomas Capelli worked hard on the Boys Second Singles floor to get past Voyager Patrick McKenna, 7-6 (8), 7-5 to post the Warrior men’s second win.

Island School controlled the doubles arena when Zachary Davis and Foster McLychok downed the Warrior pair of Ian Sotello and Kaimani Dryer, 6-2, 6-4.

The Voyager victories continued onto the Boys Second Doubles when the Island School pair of Max McLychok and Kaikea Kaui posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Warriors Carlos Ygov-Tapia and Alex Henriques.

Island School completed its sweep of the doubles competition when Brayden King and Canaan Washburn shut down Kapaa’s Keven Dolino and Nick Uribe, 6-0, 6-0.

Kapaa next hosts Kauai High School at the Timbers Kauai at Hokuala courts, Saturday starting at 9 a.m. while Island School travels to the Waimea High School courts, also starting at 9 a.m.
