Westside Elementary girls sweep Hilo tournament

HILO — Westside Girls Basketball Club Elementary Division girls swept the floor, and the Westside Girls Basketball Club Intermediate Division suffered a loss at the hands of the Maui Sharks to finish with silver medals after participating in the Endless Summer Basketball Tournament in Hilo, Hawai‘i.

The tournament was waged in Hilo on Saturday, and wrapped up Sunday with the tournament’s finals game.

“Our Elementary Division team, composed of 5th and 6th grade girls, came home with an undefeated tournament record,” said Westside Girls Basketball Club Coach Kate Plyler. “The girls, led by our high scorers, Carmila Udarbe and Kuhela Lazaro — both averaging 7.5 points per game — ended by beating Swish of Hilo, the Stingrays of Kona, and Hokulele from the Big Island. Vailani Viavao, averaging five rebounds per game, was our team’s leading rebounder.”

Plyler said the WGBC Intermediate Division team, composed of 7th and 8th grade girls, finished the tournament in second place after losing “an incredibly fought high-paced game” to the Maui Sparks.

“We don’t often have the opportunity to play competition at such a high level, and it was amazing to see our girls step up to such a challenge, playing the Maui Sparks two times in two days,” Plyler said. “I could not be more proud of them. Additionally, our Intermediate girls beat our own Kaua‘i Ballers, and the Big Island’s HI Lyfe to earn their second place trophy.”

“La‘a Kauwe was our leading scorer across four games, averaging 8.5 points per game, but had a stand-out performance against the Sparks in the championship game, netting 17 points in just that game,” Plyler said. “Alyssa Gummerus was our leading Intermediate rebounder with seven rebounds per game average.”
