Westside orchids ready just in time for Mother’s Day

WAIMEA — After being restrained by COVID-19, the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is breaking out to offer its popular Mother’s Day Orchid and Plant Sale Friday from 9 a.m. to noon in the area fronting the Medical Office Building entrance.

Potted orchids, many of which will be in bloom, and other plants will be available to fill mothers’ baskets for Mother’s Day which, if a reminder is needed, falls on Sunday.

Coach Basilio “Bunga” Fuertes — his agriculturally inded student Carmila Udarbe and brother Anthony Udarbe will be in school because it is a school day — will have both the red and yellow onion starters available at the event.

“These are sweet onion seedlings,” Fuertes said. “They’re not the kind you use in saimin. The sweet red and yellows are growing at the Corteva Agriscience facility in Wahiawa. They’re germinating rapidly and will be ready on May 6.”

Fuertes said for growers of these seedlings, he is looking at planning a Sweet Onion Festival down at Hofgaard Park in Waimea about the time the seedlings mature and need harvesting.

Proceeds from the orchid and plant sale benefit the KVMH Auxiliary, including its scholarship program.
