Working on Mother’s Day

KAPA‘A — Jakki Nelson was supposed to have the day off Sunday.

That was until Fely Sams of Orchid Alley changed her plans.

“Jakki works on Mondays,” Sams said. “But when I opened the email, there was a bunch of orders that needs to be shipped out Monday, so I called her in for the morning.”

Sams said the shop sandwiched between Mariachi’s and the Big Blue Buddha in Kapa‘a was busy with foot traffic from early in the morning.

“People are buying,” Sams said. “We had a rush earlier in the morning from people looking for Mother’s Day gifts. The orders going out are for those who missed the earlier deadlnes for Mother’s Day.”

Sams said there are orders equal to what was shipped out last week, and she’s afraid to check the email because there might be more.

“That’s all right,” Nelson said of working on Mother’s Day. “I’m a dog mom and a cat mom. They don’t give me anything.”

Over at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e, mothers and their families were enjoying midday meals embelished with the jazz stylings of Steve Dubey and Friends performing atop a specially-decorated stage featuring the continuation of decorations on the food-court tables.

Macee Martinez, brought in by KGC for special-occasion events, was busy getting photos of mothers and their families at the special free photo backstop, as well as keiki picking up make-it-take-it gifts for mom, and getting help from Martinez in putting everything together.

KGC partners with the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau in presenting the Pau Hana Mart today from 3 p.m.
