Fit fund grant donates $12k

LIHUE — Through its Fit Fund grant, the Kauai North Shore Community Foundation is helping seven nonprofit organizations with fitness or health programs.

“This is the third year the Foundation gives Fit Fund grants to other nonprofits that do wonderful work in our community,” said Ken Rosenthal, vice chair of the Kauai North Shore Community Foundation board and chair of its Health & Wellness Committee.

Sharing $12,000 in Fit Fund grants, the recipients are:

• Hanalei Hawaiian Civic Club for the Haena to Hanalei Run

• Hanalei Elementary School to rebuild its Healthy Snacks orchard/vegetable gardens which were destroyed during last year’s April flood

• Kauai Lifeguard Association for Junior Lifeguard equipment

• Kauai Outrigger Association for this year’s State Championship Regatta on Hanalei Bay.

• Keala Foundation for a keiki crossfit program in Anahola

• Namolokama O’Hanalei Canoe Club for the Hanalei Bay Swim Challenge

• Rotary Club of Hanalei for its Heart of Gold Campaign.

The recipients will receive their grants at the check presentations during the Anaina Hou Community Park’s Trivia Night on Friday.

The Fit Fund is funded by proceeds of Ohana Fit Fest, which is hosted annually by the Kauai North Shore Community Foundation.

Ohana Fit Fest is an obstacle trail run/walk on the Wai Koa Loop Trail in Kilauea; a community expo takes place at the Anaina Hou Porter Pavilion.

“The more participation we get for Ohana Fit Fest, the more goes back to the community through the Fit Fund,” Rosenthal said.

This year’s Ohana Fit Fest is a partnership with Anaina Hou Community Park and is scheduled Oct. 5. Participants can run the 5K course with obstacles along the way, or walk the 5K just for fun and avoid the obstacles.

The 10K run will challenge those looking for tougher obstacles.
