There weren’t just free hot dogs on Saturday following the opening festivities (yes, they had hula — keiki from Na Hui O Kauakaokalani with Kumu Hula Maka Herrod who had to be on Oahu for another kumu’s hoike) for the 10-day Koloa Plantation Days at Koloa Village. Porky’s Aloha in a Bun (no wonder Samuel Brown of Cheesesteak Sammy’s said Porky’s is his hero) was offering free hot dogs complete with choice of dressing.
Brown has just returned from a Mainland vacation (how many Grove Farm Market shoppers missed having those cheesy steak sandwiches?) and said he wants to work out something with Midnight Bear Breads to bake his bread (the bread counts when doing sandwiches). He’ll be at the Aug. 2 Grove Farm Market craft fair component along with the Mokihana Club who’ll have those unbeatable baked goods to help their scholarship fund.
Marty Kuala (remember those strawberry shakes for the moopuna from Smash Cafe?) was getting nervous because she had to say a few words, and her moopuna from Oregon hadn’t arrived yet. Marty is going to be the grand marshal for the parade that takes place on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. (when does the roads close?) from the Koloa Public and School Library (check out their used book sale on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday).
Hats off to Koloa Village for hosting the Historic Sugar Exhibit (commemorative caps and shirts are available; shop early before they run out of sizes) in the Marketplace that’s right across the Flip Flop Shop that was killing it with their tent specials.
