Kicking off the decade with change

Change could very well be the defining descriptor of the year 2020 as we head into the new decade with a Super Bowl that didn’t feature the Patriots, an active Hawaii legislative session, upcoming presidential, state and local elections, and new partnerships in the Kauai community that work toward resiliency and disaster response.

That’s just to name a few.

Of course, The Garden Island’s transition to a new editor-in-chief makes that list as well — a changing of the guard from Bill Buley, who served as editor for seven years on Kauai, to Jessica Else, who has been reporting with TGI for five years.

We wish Buley all the best as he settles into his new newsroom in Idaho.

Here on Kauai, community feedback on the transition of editors has been heartfelt and incredible; we’ve received many comments, emails and text messages voicing congratulations and hopes for the future of TGI.

We love hearing from you; your suggestions, ideas and comments help show us the topics the community cares about; the problems to highlight, the kudos dole out and everything in-between.

Keep them coming.

We want to hear from our community through news tips and letters to the editor, guest commentaries and relevant comments included in the news stories our reporters write for TGI every day. The people, after all, are the fabric from which community news is made.

Sure, change is in the wind with Else as the new editor at TGI and a search on for another reporter in the newsroom, but some things will always be tried and true parts of The Garden Island newspaper.

Like “Da Shadow”.

Jerome Freitas, retired Department of Transportation worker, has been a fixture in TGI since 2004 with his column “Da Shadow”, looking at solutions to county issues. He usually poses two or three questions for County of Kauai in his column and we print the answers weekly.

Freitas took a break from “Da Shadow” recently due to health issues, but is back in the saddle. Watch for his column and submit questions you have to him at theshadow96751@gmail.com.

As we move into the second month of 2020, we’re looking forward to reporting the news of Kauai for you, our community, and being your number one go-to news source for happenings around the island. Have a story idea or a letter to the editor for us? Send it our way; we’re looking forward to hearing from you.
