Diverting Wai‘ale‘ale waters a terrible idea

Water is life. We all know this to be true. The ancient Hawaiians knew it, and we as modern humans know it.

Water is the life blood of our island. No one has the right to “own” or divert the water, for it belongs to us all, equally. It belongs to the future generations of humans and animals.

The absolute greed of diverting the Wai‘ale‘ale waters is a most terrible idea which will no doubt have repercussions beyond our current comprehension.

The watershed of this sacred mountain is the most pristine water on the planet. By diverting this water, we are killing the earth, our island, our way of life, our future.

The streams of Makaleha are already just a trickle. If this continues, the streams will dry up, the farms will suffer, the animals will suffer, and ultimately we all will suffer.

The greed of a few does not trump the good of the many.

Myself and countless other people of Hawaii will give all our mana, our life force, to protect our waters, our land, our future, to preserve and protect Wai‘ale‘ale for all present and future generations.

As Hawaiian legislators, you swore an oath to uphold Hawaii’s most sacred motto: Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻAina i ka Pono, or the life of the land is preserved in righteousness!

I stand in solidarity forever, protecting the sacred waters of Kauai.

With Aloha,

Mahana Dunn, Kilauea
