Art Cafe Hemingway not alone in struggle
Aloha Kaua‘i friends. On Tuesday, July 14, the front-page article told a very distressing story of the struggle facing the owners of Art Café Hemingway.
How sad that a couple who have put their heart, money and dreams into a venture that created relationships and a growing community of people who enjoyed the food and camaraderie in a unique, home-like atmosphere, has met up with the crushing coronavirus that has created havoc for so many.
No income, but the debts go on. When you go into business, especially a small, local business, you put it all on the table. I know Art Café Hemingway is not alone facing this tragic situation that has caused major losses for so many, but they are still trying to survive.
The news article said there is a Go Fund Me account where we can help. I thought that, additionally, many of us here on Kaua‘i can help in a more-direct way. I am sure I know at least 100 people here who could go by for a cup of coffee and leave a gift of $100. I say “gift” because a tip would be taxable. Of the people I know, they each probably know 50 to 100 more, and we could together give our aloha as well as $100. If you didn’t really need that $1,200 sent to each of us to support the economy during this time of crisis, this is how you can support the economy.
Are there 250 people here on Kaua‘i who can spare $100? I think so. If you can do it, do it.
There will no doubt be other opportunities to help others, so if you can, do it. That’s the Kaua‘i way.
