Letters for Sunday, January 10, 2021

Heartbroken, but not surprised

My last letter to the editor, dated Dec. 22, stated my fear that the outgoing president would try to overthrow our democracy.

The world watched the insurrection, inspired by his rhetoric and behavior yesterday (Wednesday, Jan. 6).

I am heartbroken, but not surprised.

President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris will lead our nation on the long road to healing.

Praying for one nation indivisible.

Ruthann Jones, Soquel, California

Biden, be careful with nuclear agreements

In signing a nuclear agreement with Iran or North Korea, President Biden must hold out for the inspection of suspected sites without a waiting period.

If there is a waiting period, they can move the materials for making a nuclear weapon — such as enriched uranium — to a second site during the waiting period for the first site; then when the second site comes under suspicion, it will have a waiting period during which the material can be moved to a third site; and so on.

Mahalo to Kaua‘i’s educators

We’d like to thank Kaua‘i’s educators for their dedication to their students and their profession during this unusual and difficult school year.

We have the opportunity to interact with many of Kaua‘i’s educators as they shop in Kumu’s Cupboard. Whether they are teaching face-to-face, in a hybrid system or completely virtually, their concern for both their students’ education and wellbeing is evident.

We have been inspired by their ingenuity to create a positive learning environment and lessons for their students. The changes in procedures, teaching methodology and the uncertainty of the continuity of the school year have added stress to many of their jobs. We applaud their efforts and professionalism and thank them for their continued work on behalf of our keiki.
