Doris Yoshiko Momohara

Doris Yoshiko Momohara passed away on Jan. 20, 2022, at the age of 98, at home in Kalaheo. She was born on Feb. 1, 1923, in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. She was the Vice President and Accountant for Momohara Farms.

She was preceded in death by her husband Stanley Momohara, parents Koku and Uto Shiroma, brothers David and George Shiroma and sisters Mildred Taira and Florence Miyahira.

Doris is survived by her sons Daniel (Linda) Momohara of Kalaheo, Melvin Momohara of Kalaheo, daughter Suzette (Harvey Maeda) Momohara of Kalaheo, grandchildren Michelle (Pat) Funai, Matthew Momohara, Nathan (Kristin) Momohara, Kimberley (John) Medeiros, Kellyne Capuano, Kurt (Kimberly) Momohara, Kiley Momohara, great-grandchildren Camden Funai, Lily Momohara, John Medeiros, Jason Medeiros, Kaelin Capuano and Kichelle Momohara, great-great-grandchild Sofina Ann Mari Medeiros, hanai-granddaughter Tram (Travis) Dang-Oh, brother Edwin (Ida) Shiroma of Honolulu, sister Alice Chung of Kaneohe, caregivers Darlene Soares, Violet Gabai, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private service will be held and the family requests no koden (monetary gift) or flowers.

Garden Island Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

John Godfredo Gandeza

John Godfredo Gandeza, 75, of Lihu‘e, passed away on Jan. 17, 2022. He was born on Nov. 8, 1946, in Lihu‘e. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Vietnam War. He was the owner of John Gandeza Photography and later retired from the County of Kaua‘i Public Works.

He was preceded in death by parents Ricardo Gandeza and Tarcila Soriano, brothers Nicasio Asuncion Sr., Rudy Gandeza and sister Sylvia Camat.

John is survived by his wife Callie Gandeza, son Christopher (Taryn “Maka”) Gandeza, daughter Tamra (Kalani) Addington, granddaughter Wailana Gandeza, grandsons Kailer Chow-Agor, Kade Gandeza, hanai son Roven Poai, stepmother Esther Gandeza, brothers James Gandeza, Joseph (Shelley) Gandeza, Jacob (Noreen) Gandeza, sisters Plebicita Jaquias, Edna (Julio) Bolante, Medina (Andy) Pawley, Jessica (Norvin) Olivas, Florence Gandeza Tavares, sisters-in-law Jackie Gandeza, Lorna Asuncion, Cynthia Johnson, brother-in-law Melvin Camat, numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held on March 5, 2022, at Smith’s Tropical Paradise with visitation at 9 to 10:15 a.m., service to follow. Masks and social distancing will be observed. In order to enter, attendees over the age of 5 must provide proof of full vaccination and have cleared 14 days from their last dose or proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 24 hours before the start of the event.

Robert Defuntorum Juliano

Robert Defuntorum Juliano, 47, of Puhi, passed away at home on Jan. 16, 2022. He was born in Bacag Villasis, Pangasinan, Philippines on Aug. 12, 1974.

He was preceded in death by his parents Rodolfo and Hilaria Juliano, maternal grandparents Eduardo and Esmerenciana Defuntorum, paternal grandparents Dionicio and Susana Derige Juliano.

Robert is survived by his sons Nicholas Jesper G. Palmquist, Ashton J. Gambeng-Juliano, both of Oregon, siblings John D. Juliano, Julie Ann D. Juliano (Fredie) Ramos, Juanito D. (Maribel) Juliano, Mary Ann D. (Rolando) Ballesteros, Janette D. Juliano, Ferdinand D. (Madelyn) Juliano, Aunty Leonida Defuntorum Leones, Aunty Leyte Juliano, numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home with viewing beginning from 9 a.m. and services celebrated at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow. Social distancing and masks will be observed.

Lorenzo ‘Larry’ Simbre

Lorenzo “Larry” Simbre passed away on Feb. 10, 2022, at the age of 83, in Waimea, Kaua‘i. He was born on Oct. 2, 1938, in Wailua, O‘ahu. He was a Merchant Seamanship Cook.

He was preceded in death by his parents Urbano Sudario Simbre and Maria Caronilla Simbre, brothers William Domingo, Pancing Lopez, Domingo Lopez, Eugene Ventura, James Simbre, sisters Leonita Jeffiries and Beatrice Simbre.

Larry is survived by his sons Lorenzo Simbre, Jr. of O‘ahu, Bernard L. Simbre of O‘ahu, Luke (Kailani) Schmitt of Seattle, Washington, hanai-son Peyton Siliado of Kaua‘i, daughters Vanessa F. Simbre of O‘ahu, Holly C. (Nelson) Fontanilla of O‘ahu, Blossom N. (William) Arthur of Kaua‘i, Lorena M. (Darrell) Cadelinia of O‘ahu, 23 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, brothers Stephen Simbre of Hawai‘i, Richard (Linda) Simbre of O‘ahu, Urbano (Robin) Simbre Jr. of O‘ahu, Edward Ventura of California, Robert (Carol) Ventura of O‘ahu, sisters Jane Ringor of O‘ahu, Elizabeth Jardin of Texas, Shirley R. (Wayne) Simbre-Medeiros of Kaua‘i, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private service will be held.

Helene Kimiko Yamagata

Helene Kimiko Yamagata of Kapa‘a, passed away on Jan. 23, 2022, at the age of 84, in Lihu‘e. She was born on Oct. 28, 1937, in Waimea, Kaua‘i. She was a retired public elementary school teacher.

She was preceded in death by her husband Philip Mitsuru Yamagata, parents Kiitchi and Michie Yamashiro, sister Dorothy (Hannah) Yamagata, in-laws Mark Fewel, Ronald Yamagata and Hideo and Edith Oride.

Helene is survived by her son Randy K. Yamagata of Kapa‘a, daughter Jeri L. Yamagata of Kapa‘a, sisters Ann (Dr. Michael) Suzuki of Maui, Gail Fewel of California, sisters-in-law Nancy Unemori (Fat-deceased) of Moloka‘i, Janet Yoshishige (Isamu) of Kaua‘i, Leatrice Tanaka of Kaua‘i, Janet Yamagata of O‘ahu, numerous aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Service will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Garden Island Mortuary.

A walk-through visitation is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. followed by a celebration of life at 11:30 a.m. The family request casual attire and no flowers. Due to COVID-19, social distancing and masks are required.

Macaria Carias Ampoloquio

Macaria Carias Ampoloquio passed away on Feb. 20, 2022, at the age of 86, in ‘Ele‘ele. She was born on Nov. 15, 1935, in the Philippines. She was retired.

She was preceded in death by her father Atanacio Carias, mother Trinidad Montoya and son Juan Ampoloquio.

Macaria is survived by her daughter Elena Ampoloquio Laborte of Kaua‘i, brother Lorito M. Carias of the Philippines, sister Nicasia Simogan of the Philippines, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service will be held at Garden Island Mortuary on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022. A walk-through visitation is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Service is at 10:30 to 11 a.m. Due to COVID-19 social distancing and masks are required.
