Nancy “Tiny”
Faye Thain

Nancy “Tiny” Faye Thain passed away on Jan. 7, 2020. She grew up in Waimea, and graduated from Punahou School in 1962.

She was preceded in death by husband Ian “Scotty” Thain, parents Jean Burns Faye and Alan E. Faye, and siblings Bruce Faye and Sally Faye Muirhead.

She is survived by daughter Cindy Riedy, son Curtis Cooper, grandchildren Bailey Riedy, Katelyn Cooper and Jamison Cooper, brothers Michael Faye and Alan E Faye Jr., and sisters Janet Lilly and Maren Faye.

In her early years, she was active in the West Kaua‘i Saddle Club, where she was known for competing in barrel-racing events in local rodeos and helping many 4-H members with their horsemanship. She also swam competitively for the Waimea Swim Team, and is still listed among the top swimmers from Kaua‘i.

She worked as a real estate broker in California and Oregon before retiring and moving to Virginia to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Spending summers at Koke‘e inspired a lifelong love for hiking, and in recent years she traveled, checking off several bucket-list hikes, while also being active in the lives of her children and grandchildren.

Friends and family are welcome to share in a celebration of life gathering Saturday, July 31, between 3 and 5 p.m. at Ishihara House, 9730 Oioi Rd., Waimea.

Ervin A. Contrades Sr.

Ervin A. Contrades Sr. passed away on June 19, 2021, at the age of 91. He was born on Jan. 28, 1930, in Lihu‘e, and worked for Amfac Sugar.

He was preceded in death by wife Mercy Contrades, parents Peter and Ruby Contrades, sister Myrtle (Frank) Napoleon, brother Peter Noah Contrades and sister-in-law Emmaleen Contrades.

He is survived by sons Erv A. Contrades Jr., Clayton C. Contrades and D. Kalei (Wiley Ann) Contrades, hanai son Charlie R. Strunk, daughters Lavana M. (Debra Almeida) Contrades and Sandi L. (Jerry) Costa, brothers Waldemar John (Patsy) Contrades, Daniel Contrades and Joseph (Betty Jane) Contrades, sister Imogene Richards, sister-in-law Anita Contrades of Moloka‘i, grandchildren Malia L. (Kyle) Napoleon, Roy (Brooke Akaji) Costa, Kalani Contrades, Kelsey K. (Linda) Contrades, Kendal (Naomi) Contrades and Kristine (Avaiyak) Burnell, great-grandchildren Kurt A. and Kyler P. Napoleon, Nakoa L. and Nainoa K. Costa, Keani, Angelo and Dominic Contrades, Scot and Kyle Contrades, Kiara, Kylen and Kendra Avaiyak Jr., and Bella and Ahkivgaq Bryce Burnell.

A celebration of life is Saturday, July 10, at Kaua‘i Veterans Center in Lihu‘e, with visitation with the family at 9 a.m. and memorial service at 10 a.m., with a luncheon to follow. The family requests that flowers be omitted.

Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens &Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Richard T. Oshiro

Richard T. Oshiro, 83, of Kapa‘a, was born July 16, 1937, in Hawai‘i, and passed away May 31, 2021, on Kaua‘i. He retired from the U.S. Air Force.

He was preceded in death by parents Seichi and Yoshiko Oshiro, and brothers Steven Oshiro and Stanley Oshiro.

He is survived by sons Richard (Wanda) Oshiro, Kurt (Sandy) Oshiro of Kapa‘a, daughter Debra Oshiro of O‘ahu, grandchildren Brandi, Richie Boy, Richell (Kawika Sweet), Randy, Elizabeth, Rex and Brendan, seven great-grandchildren, brothers Wayne Oshiro and Ronald Oshiro, sisters Susan Kanemoto and Kathleen Mew, all of O‘ahu, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery on Saturday, July 3, with a celebration of life at 11 a.m. The family suggests casual attire and requests that flowers be omitted.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, face masks and social distancing are required.

Garden Island Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
