Alvaro Serapio

Alvaro Serapio passed away on May 18, 2021, at the age of 97 in ‘Ele‘ele. He was born on Feb. 22, 1924, in Langiden Abra, Philippines and was a farm laborer.

Alvaro was preceded in death by his parents Infiel Serapio and Padaman Balanay, siblings Dominga Martinez, Rosalina Duran, Federico Serapio and grandson John-Eric Parinas.

Alvaro is survived by his wife Beatriz C. Serapio, sons Hory (Leticia) Serapio of ‘Ele‘ele, Amado (Rebecca) Serapio of ‘Ele‘ele, Fidel (Estela) Serapio of Kaumakani, daughters Avelina (Nestor) Parinas of ‘Ele‘ele, Leticia Dela Cruz of Manila, Philippines, Zenaida (Clem) Lum of Las Vegas, Nevada, Crispina (Roel) Acob of ‘Ele‘ele, grandchildren Jay Parinas, Helen Serapio, Norman Serapio, Jay Mark Serapio, Aaron Acob, Robyn Acob, Marc Andrei Serapio, Andrian Serapio, Dawn Serapio, Kaye Serapio, Hazel Serapio, Tricia Dela Cruz, Precious Dela Cruz, Nikki Joy Dela Cruz, great-grandchildren Phoebe Ancheta, Noem Serapio, Anela Serapio, Natalie, Serapio, Maya Avery Parinas, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Walk-through visitation is scheduled at Garden Island Mortuary on Saturday, July 3, 2021, from 9 to 11 a.m. Celebration of Life to follow. The family requests casual attire and no flowers. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, face masks and social distancing is required.

Marie Christine Relacion

Marie Christine Relacion passed away on June 18, 2021, at the age of 61, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. She was born on Dec. 24, 1959, in Lihu‘e. She was a retail manager at DXL Men’s Apparel.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents Pablo and Juanita Sarmiento, brothers Edward “Goto” Sarmiento, Robert Sarmiento and father of her children Jeffrey Relacion.

Marie is survived by her son Chance (Nohonani) Relacion of Honolulu, daughter Shante Furutani of Wailua, grandchildren Kiara Furutani, Austin, La‘akea, Paiea and Hauka‘imaikalani Relacion, great-grandchildren Blayze and Leiyah Relacion, brothers Pablo (Nadia) Sarmiento of Koloa, Stanley (Alicia) Sarmiento of Kapa‘a, Richard “Choco” Sarmiento of Lihu‘e, sisters Loretta Salcedo of Lihu‘e, Gloria Domingo of Puhi, Rose Sherman of California, Connie (Edgard) Salcedo of California, Priscilla (Wesley) Ladera of Hanama‘ulu, numerous nieces and nephews.

The family has requested a private service.

Hazel A. Sugibayashi

Hazel A. Sugibayashi passed away on June 5, 2021, at the age of 89, in Lihu‘e. She was born on Nov. 9, 1931, in Numila. She was a retail clerk.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Isao Sugibayashi, parents James and Margaret Kurayuki and sister Edith Kurayuki.

Hazel is survived by her sons Ross (Irene) Sugibayashi of O‘ahu, Lee Sugibayashi of Lihu‘e, daughter Rona Miura (Victor Sasaki) of Lihu‘e, granddaughter Kylee Sugibayashi (Ryoka Sasaki), sisters Patricia Oyama, Janet (Allan) Yamauchi both of O‘ahu, numerous uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private family service was held. The family request no koden (monetary gifts).

Sylvia Morris Martin

Sylvia Morris Martin passed away on June 18, 2021, at the age of 82, at her residence in Lawa‘i. She was born on Aug. 18, 1938, in Port Allen. She worked for the Kauai Pineapple Company, Kauai Motors and was a substitute teacher for many schools around the island.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her ex-husband Antone M. Martin Jr., parents Frank Santiago Morris, Beatrice Sedeno Souza, brothers Frank Gilbert Morris, Leonard Morris and Herbert Morris.

Sylvia is survived by her sons Antone (Dawn) Martin III, Dean (Dessamae) Martin, David J. Martin all of Lawa‘i, daughter Cynthia Choch (Michael) Canne of Reno, Nevada, 12 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, sisters Susie (William) Lopes of Kapa‘a, Laverne Bessert of Wailua, brother Melvin (Cheryl) Morris of Lawa‘i, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Mark James Vasquez

Mark James Vasquez passed away on June 20, 2021, at the age of 54, in Lawa‘i. He was born on Oct. 20, 1966, in Santa Clara, California. He was a dedicated servant of Jehovah and enjoyed being a contractor.

Mark was preceded in death by his father Jim Vasquez and brother Zachary Vasquez.

Mark is survived by his wife Liana Newall, daughters Kourtney Gregg (Christian Perez) of Kekaha, Kaylah Rosario (Jay) of Waimea, grandchildren Kayden, Kobejay and Kami Rosario, Kenzie, Kaveah and Cruz Perez, mother Carmen Vasquez, brothers Leonard Vasquez (Melissa) of Hollister, California, Andrew Vasquez of Pleasanton, California, Ciso Vasquez of Dublin, California, Christopher Vasquez of Santa Rosa, California, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held via Zoom. The family will provide the login information.

Troy William Martin

Troy William Martin of ‘Ele’ele, passed away on May 23 2021, at his home at the age of 55. Born in Reno, Nevada, on June 1, 1965, Troy was the President of Martin Steel Constructors, Inc. and a beloved member of his community.

Troy was preceded in death by his mother Marjorie Jean Martin and his father Harold Lowell Martin.

Troy is survived by his life partner Malia Kali, son Chance Martin, step-children Malisha and Kepa Kali, Brilynn and Bridan Imaoka, brothers Todd and Chris Martin, numerous family and friends.

A drive-by Celebration of Troy’s Life will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at the Hanapepe Tennis Courts from 10 a.m. to 1 pm.

Richard T. Oshiro

Richard T. Oshiro, 83, of Kapa‘a, was born July 16, 1937, in Hawai‘i, and passed away May 31, 2021, on Kaua‘i. He retired from United States Air Force.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents Seichi and Yoshiko Oshiro, brothers Steven Oshiro and Stanley Oshiro.

Richard is survived by sons Richard (Wanda) Oshiro, Kurt (Sandy) Oshiro of Kapa‘a, daughter Debra Oshiro of O‘ahu, grandchildren Brandi, Richie Boy, Richell (Kawika Sweet), Randy, Elizabeth, Rex and Brendan, 7 great-grandchildren, brothers Wayne Oshiro and Ronald Oshiro, sisters Susan Kanemoto and Kathleen Mew all of O‘ahu, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held at Kauai Veterans Cemetery on July 3, 2021, with Celebration of Life at 11 a.m. The family suggests casual attire and flowers be omitted. Due to COVID-19 restrictions face masks and social distancing is required.
