Loren Dinsmore Franklin
Loren Dinsmore Franklin, 86, of Kapa‘a, passed away at home on May 29, 2021. He was born in Washington on March 5, 1935. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he worked as a tour guide, Realtor, salesperson, distributor and various entrepreneurial pursuits.
He was preceded in death by parents Arnold and Viva Franklin and grandson Dean Ikaika Brown-Aiwohi.
He is survived by his wife Carol Franklin, daughter Toni (Bob) Fahnestock of Nevada, sons Kelly (Helen) Franklin of Hanalei, Buddy (Sandra) Franklin of Kekaha, Boyd (Mariko) Franklin of Lahaina, Maui, Lorrin Aiwohi of Kapahi, Bryan (Akala) Aiwohi of Wailua, Nathan (Leah) Aiwohi of Kapahi, 15 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, sister Mary (Roland) Campos of Florida, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life is Friday, June 11, at St. Catherine Church, with visitation from 9 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home at noon.

Trudy Mikie Merchant
Trudy Mikie Merchant, age 73, sadly passed away on April 28, 2021, in ‘Ai‘ea, O‘ahu. She was born in Lihu‘e on Jan. 7, 1948, by mother Patsy Fujioka and father Kanao Asaoka.
She is survived by sisters Iris Faria and Ardis Ueki, brother Mark K. Asaoka, children Renee C. Arapoff, Kenneth P.K. Bukoski, and Bryson W. Bukoski, grandchildren Kira La Chance, Christian La Chance, Krysti M. Bukoski, James K. Bukoski and Mason Bukoski, and great-grandchildren Zairie L. Bukoski, Zalea H. Bukoski and Zeeani M. Bukoski.
She graduated in 1966 from Kaua‘i High School. She was then married to Kenneth Bukoski for her first marriage. She was a stay-at-home mom who enjoyed doing anything and everything with her kids.
She went on to become a mini photo lab operator at Qualex (Kodak). She then moved on and became the mini photo lab supervisor at the Navy Exchange, where she met her surviving husband David Merchant.
She was also a childcare giver to many children throughout her life. She also left behind two pets which she loved, Lizzy (dog), and Eddie (bird).
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 19, at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, 1727 Pali Hwy., Honolulu, HI 96813. Due to the COVID pandemic, the temple service will be reserved for immediate family. It will be available via Zoom.

Burial will be open to the public and will be held at Nu‘uanu Memorial Park, 2233 Nu‘uanu Ave, Honolulu, HI 96817. Bentos and drinks will be provided at the burial service.
Phillip J. Kamakea
Phillip J. Kamakea, of Kalaheo, peacefully joined the Lord on May 20, 2021, at the age of 79. He was born in Honolulu and retired with McBryde Sugar Company.
He was preceeded in death by parents Thomas Suprimedio and Louisa Kamakea and daughter-in-law Angeline “Gigie” Kamakea.
He leaves behind his loving wife Patricia Kamakea, daughter Rose (Carlos) Kamakea-Colon of Florida, sons Phillip (Patti) Kamakea, David Kamakea and Kalani (Trisha) Kamakea, all of Kaua‘i, 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life is Saturday, June 5, at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, with viewing from 9 to 11 a.m. Burial will follow at 11:15 a.m. at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
Estelle Alohalinda Fukushima
Estelle Alohalinda Fukushima passed away on May 14, 2021, at Straub Hospital, at the age of 83.
She was born on Oct. 28, 1937 at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital.
She was a school teacher at Koloa, Kalaheo and Kekaha schools.
She was preceded in death by parents Isidro and Hermilina Bermodez and sisters Florida Bermodez and Leonora Bermodez.
She is survived by husband Ryoichi “Poroc” Fukushima of Kekaha, brothers Jaime Bermodez of O‘ahu and Justino (Myong Son) Bermodez of Las Vegas, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The service is at Garden Island Mortuary on Saturday, June 5, with a walk-thru visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. and celebration of life to follow.
The family suggests aloha attire and requests that flowers be omitted. Due to COVID-19, masks and social distancing are required.

Walter Silva
Walter Silva passed away on June 6, 2020, at the age of 83. He was born on July 1, 1936 in Makaweli. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and retired as a plumber.
He was preceded in death by parents John Sr. and Ethel Silva, and brothers Franklin Silva and Leonard Silva.
He is survived by wife Jasmine Lopez-Silva, sons Duane (Cathie) Silva of Fairwood, Washington, John (Tami) Cummings III of Kapa‘a and Maluhia (Nikki) Cummings of Puyallup, Washington, daughters Lynn (Chuck) Talbert of Mapel Valley, Washington, Christel (Antonio) Pope of Makaweli, Lapule (George) Valente of Makaweli and Joanna Silva of Covington, Washington, 25 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, brothers John (Irene) Silva Jr. of Mililani, Antone Roy Silva of Hawai‘i and Richard Silva of Kalaheo, sister-in-law Bernice Silva of Makaweli, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
His service is Friday, June 4, at Kaua‘i Veterans Center in Lihu‘e, with a walk-thru visitation from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and service from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Due to COVID-19, limited seating is available. Masks and social distancing are required.
There will be a private scattering of ashes.
Brenda Honda
Brenda Honda passed away on May 30, 2021, at the age of 75, in Kalaheo.
She was born on March 5, 1946 in Waimea, and was an educator.
She was preceded in death by father Noboru “Nogi” Muraoka and sisters Lucile Horita and Priscilla Nitta.
She is survived by daughter Shari (Justin) Orian of Chandler, Arizona, fur baby Ziggy, mother Mikiko “Judy” Muraoka of Kalaheo, brothers Calvin (Jane) Muraoka of Hanapepe and Leighton (Lisa) Muraoka of ‘Ele‘ele, sister Sheila (Gerry) Tamura of Hilo, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
At her request, no service will be held.
Visitors are welcome to pay their respects at the family home until June 18.

Tante Morales
Tante Morales, 74, of Hanama‘ulu, passed away at Wilcox Medical Center on May 11, 2021. He was born in Callaguip, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, on April 12, 1947, and was the proprietor of Morales Auto Workshop.
He was preceded in death by father Jose Morales and the mother of his six children, Corazon Morales.
He is survived by mother Trinidad Morales, companion Consuelo “Cely” Claro, children Arnold (Becky) Morales, Georgia (Jose) Ancheta, Dennis (Kamala) Morales, Grace (Ivan Aribal) Morales, Jeanne (Ron) Tadiarca, Hazel (Darin) Kashiwabara, Christine (Joe Limbaugh) Morales, Rebecca (Terence) Morimoto and Marlon Bautista, 28 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, siblings Romulo (Shiela) Morales, Ferdinand (Linda) Morales, Editha (Dennis) Abigania, Midel Romy (Rebecca) Morales, Betty (Amon) Tayama, Joy (Steve) Middleton and Angie Morales, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life is Saturday, June 26, at Kapa‘a Missionary Church, 4-758 Kuhio Hwy., Kapa‘a, with visitation from 10 a.m. and services beginning at 11 a.m. Face masks and social distancing are required. Follow Tante Morales’ Facebook page for live streaming information.
