Hope Grace Kumie Simao

Hope Grace Kumie Simao, 10, of Kalaheo, passed away at her home in Kalaheo on Feb. 22, 2019.

Born on March 17, 2008 in Punahou, Oahu, she was preceded in death by great-grandparents Manuel (Kumie) Simao, Mary Duque, Thomas Tokioka and Gilbert (Dorothy) Barretto.

She is survived by father Jonathan Barretto, mother Darrellyne (Jason Keahi) Caldeira Jr., brothers Micah Barretto of Kapaa and Noah Simao of Kalaheo, sister Jordan Simao of Kalaheo, grandparents Darrel (Diana) Simao, Donna (John) Takiguchi and Patrick (Jenniffer) Barretto, great-grandparent Grace Tokioka, and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, April 13, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m., where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. The family suggests casual attire.

Garden Island Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jack Curtis ‘Jackie Boy’ Odo

Jack Curtis “Jackie Boy” Odo was born on Sept. 19, 1958, in Renton, Washington. At the age of 60, he passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2019, while picking opihi, one of his favorite pasttimes.

After graduating from Waimea High School, he moved to Oahu to attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation. He worked as a care coordinator for special needs children and adults for 15 years as well as a physical education director for a church school before moving back to Kauai.

He spent his remaining years on Kauai as a substitute teacher, educational assistant, summer school teacher, and A+ After-School group leader and program aide for the state Department of Education. For a few summers, he was employed as a coordinator for the County of Kauai Summer Fun program and did part time work at Brick Oven Pizza.

He took pride in doing yard work for family and friends during his spare time, but was happiest when playing his guitar and singing at family get-togethers. He brought joy to many visitors when performing at the Friday Art Nights in Hanapepe. His beautiful talent will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents Tarokichi and Yukiko Odo and Jose Guadalupe Bulatao.

He is survived by his parents Kaoru and Mabel Jean Odo and sisters, Josilu “Josie” (Vernon) Parongao, Lori (Laine) Griffith, Karyn (Russell) Reynolds III and Shari (Charles) Dang, nieces Qyla and Quincee Parongao and Charise “Rissy” Ponce, nephews Braxton Parongao, Asher Griffith, Tyran Ponce and Zackary and Cameron Dang, grandnephews Kysn and Kvyn Ponce and Brody Melendez, and grandniece Tevai Ponce, who were all playfully trained to call him “Kako,” as well as loving uncles, aunties and cousins.

A private service will be at the Koloa Union Church and inurnment at the Kekaha Methodist Church will be held at a later date.

Tsuneko ‘Sue’ Ono

Tsuneko “Sue” Ono, 94, of Lihue, passed away on March 21, 2019, in Lihue.

She was born on July 1, 1924, in Waimea.

She was preceded in death by husband Champ S. Ono, and brothers Robert Tamaribuchi, George Tamaribuchi and Kay Tamaribuchi.

She is survived by son Mark (Darcy Attisani) Ono of Kapaa, daughters Marianne (Robert) Susinetti of Lihue, Annabel (Kurtis) Saiki of Kaunakakai and Kathleen (David Foord) Ventimiglia of Monterey, California, grandchildren Kristine (Juan) Cornejo, Kaleo Saiki, Katie-Ann (Jr.) Bumanglag, Kyle Saiki, Kellie (Michael) Ventimiglia, Stephen Ventimiglia, Lee (Weezy) Iboshi, Ronn (les) Iboshi and Lana Bilbo, 10 great-grandchildren, brothers Kinney Tamaribuchi of Lihue, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 4, at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe from 9:30 a.m., with services at 10 a.m.

The family requests casual attire and asks that koden (monetary gifts) be omitted.
