Sakiko Okihara

Sakiko Okihara, of Kekaha, passed away on Jan. 6, 2023 in Waimea, at the age of 100. She was born on June 13, 1922 in Makaweli. She was a cafeteria manager at Waimea High School and a member of Honpa Hongwanji and Kekaha Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by husband Kiyoichi Okihara, sisters Chieko Nitta and Tokiko Murakami, and brothers Sadamu Okada and James Okada.

She is survived by daughters Amy (Michael) Willman of Michigan and Kate (Scott) Hardwick of Kekaha, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, sister Nobue Watanabe of Kekaha, sisters-in-law Emiko Okada of California and Michiyo Hori of Waimea, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of life is at the West Kaua“i Hongwanji Mission, Waimea Temple, on Sunday, Jan. 29. Visitation is from 2 to 3 p.m. and services at 3 p.m.

The family suggests casual attire and welcomes flowers. The family requests no koden (monetary gifts). Due to COVID-19, masks are required and temperature will be taken.

Frank J. Mattia

Frank J. Mattia passed away on Dec. 22, 2022, in Lihu‘e, at the age of 67.

He was born on Dec. 25, 1954, in Bayshore, New York. He was employed at Costco as a payroll clerk in Carlsbad and in Lihu‘e for over 35 years. He cherished his beloved Costco family very much.

He was preceded in death by wife Mindy Mattia and parents Cosimo and Frances Mattia.

He is survived by sister and brother-in-law Debora A. Herzog and Joe Herzog and special friends Priscilla and Eric Tallman.

A celebration of life is Sunday, Jan. 22, at Nawiliwili Park, starting at 7:30 a.m.

Flowers will be provided to toss in the water. Canoes, surf boards and boats are welcome.

Rodney Gurtiza

Rodney Gurtiza passed away on Jan. 7, 2023, in Waimea at the age of 79.

He was born on May 12, 1944, in Hanapepe. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and a telecommunication technician.

He was preceded in death by parents Potenciano Apigo Gurtiza and Eleanor Chitoe Abe, brothers Paul Gurtiza and Merlin Gurtiza and sister Jeanne Razalan.

He is survived by sons Gerald Gurtiza of Germany and Christopher Gurtiza of Kaua‘i, daughters Carolyn L. Gurtiza of San Francisco, Marianne Finis of Florida and Jessica Gurtiza of Nashville, Tennessee, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, brothers Stanley Gurtiza of O‘ahu and Sidney Gurtiza of O‘ahu, sister Helen Takanishi of O‘ahu, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life is Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery, beginning at 11 a.m.

Jose M. Pigao Jr.

Jose M. Pigao Jr. passed away on Jan. 5, 2023, in Waimea at the age of 87.

He was born on Jan. 22, 1935, in Hawai‘i. He was a veteran of U. S. Marines and a retired sergeant with the Kaua‘i Police Department.

He was preceded in death by parents Jose and Alice Pigao Sr., sister Conchita Pigao, brother Ludivico “Jackie” Pigao, sister-in-law Joanne Pigao and brother-in-law MacArthur Dela Cruz.

He is survived by wife Rosaline Navarro Pigao, sons Dean (Mary) Pigao of Lihu‘e and Dale (Leilin) Pigao of Hanapepe, daughter Josette (Russ Santiago) Corona of Hanapepe, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, brothers Donald Pigao of Kekaha and Ronnie (Johanna) Pigao of California, sisters Rosita (Jerry) Sakamoto of Kamuela, Hawai‘i Island, Linda Dela Cruz of Kekaha, Gail (Wayne) Ayudan of Kekaha and Jenny (Rommel) Manansala of O‘ahu, stepmother Luming Yapo of California, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service is Saturday, Jan. 28, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo. Visitation is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a celebration of life. Private inurnment will be at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery. The family suggests casual attire and requests that flowers be omitted.

Silas Cody Streeter

Silas Cody Streeter, much beloved by his family and friends, passed away to his heavenly Father on Oct. 21, 2022.

Born April 22, 1991, he loved working with his mom and helping friends and family. He was an active participant in Special Olympics, and eagerly anticipated participating in the events on O‘ahu. He enjoyed his many friends there and all his friends on Kaua‘i.

A celebration of life is Sunday, Jan. 22, at Wailua Houselots Park pavilion, 4988 Nonou Road, Kapa‘a, beginning at 2 p.m. We will be sharing memories and giving honor for all the love that he showed us.

The family suggests casual attire and requests no koden (monetary donations).

Magoichi Miura

Magoichi Miura, 102, of Lihu‘e, passed away on Nov. 20, 2022, at Hale Kupuna Nursing Home. He was born on Jan. 2, 1920, in Lihu‘e. He was a carpenter and served in the Army 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Company C, 100th Infantry Battalion.

He was preceded in death by wife Ayame Koyanagi Miura.

He is survived by sons Ford (Kathy Keala) Miura of Honolulu and Leighton (Iris) Chung of Las Vegas, daughter Dolly (Lance) Nakata of Lihu‘e, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held. The family requests no koden (monetary donations).
