JoAnn Yadao

JoAnn Yadao passed away on June 6, 2022, at the age of 64, in Waimea, at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital. She was born on June 15, 1957.

She was preceded in death by father Angel Henry Yadao Sr., mother MaryAnn Frias, son Robert Alexander Iida III and grandson Hayven Young.

She is survived by sons Alvin (Melody Lopez) Reis Jr. of Puhi and Tyson (Michelle) Iida of Koloa, daughters Angela (Byron) Ono of Kalaheo and Tiannah Iida of Lihu‘e, 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, father John M. Frias III, brothers Paul (Melissa) Yadao Sr. of Lawa‘i, Lawrence (Tina) Yadao Sr. of Lawa‘i, Angel Yadao Jr. of Utah, Timothy Yadao of Utah, Reuben Yadao of Hanapepe, Sam (Josie) Yadao Sr. of ‘Ele‘ele, Shawn (Evelyn) Yadao Sr. of Hanapepe and Kelly Yadao of South Carolina, sisters Melinda (Mike) Gonsalves of Hanapepe and Terry (Michael) Iida of Lihu‘e, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Garden Island Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Alberto Academia Ho‘opi‘i

Alberto Academia Ho‘opi‘i, of ‘Ele‘ele, passed away on July 4, 2022, at the age of 87. He was born on Dec. 30, 1934 in Hana, Maui. He was a retired truck driver with Amfac lumber yard in Hanapepe.

He was preceded in death by wife Caroline Ho‘opi‘i, mother Elizabeth Lazaro, father Damiano Lazaro, daughter Rowena Stone, great-granddaughter Kaisa Gramberg, brothers Walter Dela Cruz, Damiano “Gundy” Lazaro, Andrew “Bla” Lazaro and Patrick “Paleka” Lazaro and sister Peggy Wisneski.

He is survived by sons Fabian “Duke” (Renee) Ho‘opi‘i of Alaska and Alberto “Jr.” (Patsy) Ho‘opi‘i of Kalaheo, daughters Deborah “Mamo” Shimatsu of Kekaha, Norma (Dean) Ho‘opi‘i-Manuel of Waimea and Camille (David) Hesapene of Hanapepe, 15 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, brother Anthony “Antone” (Hilda) Lazaro of Hanapepe, sisters Mercedes “Mercy” Lazaro of Kekaha and Barbara Frasco of Kekaha, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service is Saturday, Aug. 6, at St. Theresa Church in Kekaha. Viewing is from 9 to 11 a.m., Mass at 11:30 a.m. and cremation to follow. The family suggests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Kylan Mark Gandia

Kylan Mark Gandia passed away on June 27, 2022, in Lahaina, Maui, at the age of 33. He was born on March 3, 1989, in Waimea. He was a tile setter.

He is preceded in death by maternal grandparents Frederick and Emily Viquelia and paternal grandfather Richard Gandia.

He is survived by sons Kaiola Gandia of Koloa and Shylan Gandia, parents Celeste (Norman) Tanaka, Marcos (Verna Somalpong) Gandia, brother David (Lea) Hanashiro of Lahaina, Maui, sisters Holly (Kapeli Tam) Gandia of Kaumakani and Kiara Gandia of Kekaha, grandmother Mary Gandia, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service is at the Garden Island Mortuary on Saturday, July 23, with visitation from 9 to 10 a.m., services from 10 to 11 a.m. and a celebration of life to follow at Lucy Wright Park in Waimea. The family requests aloha attire and welcomes flowers.

Rosita Ontoy Paden

Rosita Ontoy Paden passed away on June 29, 2022, at the age of 85. She was born on April 15, 1937, on Kaua‘i. She was a school custodian.

She was preceded in death by spouse Ernesto Paden, parents Pedro and Victoria Ontoy, sisters Reymunda Apana and Elizabeth Alesna, and brothers Victor Amis, Jose Ontoy and Alfred Amis.

She is survived by daughters Norine Chatterjee and Lorine Paden, son Ernie (Charlene) Paden, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life is at St. Raphael Church in Koloa on Saturday, July 30, with viewing from 9 to 9:45 a.m., eulogy at 9:45 a.m., followed by Mass 10 a.m. Burial will follow at the newer St. Raphael Church Cemetery. The family requests that attendees wear face masks.

Dalton Kawika Kenji Burk

Dalton Kawika Kenji Burk, of Wailua Homesteads, passed away on July 13, 2022, at the age of 21. He was born on Sept. 8, 2000, in Lihu‘e. He worked for Duke’s Canoe Club restaurant as a line cook.

He was preceded in death by grandmother Nancine Okano and great-grandparents Masayo and Masao Okano and Nancy Malina and John Soloman.

He is survived by parents Misty Okano and Jason Thulin of Wailua, brother Dawson Burk of Wailua, grandfather Bryan Okano of Wailua, significant other Keani Ebesu of Wailua, and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

A service is Saturday, July 30, at Garden Island Mortuary, with viewing from 3 to 4:30 p.m., followed by celebration of life at 4:30 p.m. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.
