Katherine Rapozo Silva

Katherine Rapozo Silva passed away on June 10, 2022, just after reaching her goal of 100 years. She was born on May 18, 1922, on Kaua‘i. She grew up in Kilauea along with five sisters and two brothers. She attended Kilauea School and graduated in 1941 from Kaua‘i High School.

After graduating, she worked for the phone company on O‘ahu. Later, she married Ernest Silva on Feb. 21, 1943, and moved to Maui, where she raised her family.

She is survived by children Ann Noenoe (Tony) Silva Estrella, Jean Silva Deville, Jeffrey Silva and Patrick (Sharon) Silva, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three calabash great-grandchildren.

Private services were held for the family.

The family wished to send special thanks to the staff at Roselani Place and Hospice Maui, caregiver Violeta Ulep for her concern and care during her final days, and to all family and friends for their love and support.

Alice S. Taogoshi

Alice S. Taogoshi passed away on June 25, 2022, at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital at the age of 95. She was born on Aug. 22, 1926. She was a retired cook with Kapa‘a Big Save.

She is survived by son Russell J. (Lisa) Shimazu of Lihu‘e, daughter Georgiana (Randall) Matsumoto of Mililani, O‘ahu, six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service will be held at a later date. The family suggests casual attire and requests that flowers be omitted.

Teeana Kaleimokihana Valpoon

Teeana Kaleimokihana Valpoon passed away on Sept. 17, 2021, at Hilo Medical Center at the age of 32. She was born on July 15, 1989, in Lihu‘e, and was a graduate of Kapa‘a High School. She worked for Wyndham and Kuhio Motors.

She was preceded in death by sister Mistie K. Valpoon, grandfather Clifford Matsushima Sr., and grandmother Beverly Ann Valpoon.

She is survived by son Liloa (Elijah) Ragsac, parents Leah “Teete” (Russell Iida) Matsushima and Amil “Ekolu” (Nani) Valpoon, brother Cody (Ipo) Valpoon, stepbrothers Cody and Josh (Rylee Pavao) Mersberg, grandmother Katherine Matsushima, grandfather Amil “Tinoa” Valpoon, nephews Lokahi, Lawai‘a and Kaikoa, niece Lihau, and numerous aunties, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of life is Saturday, July 16, Ko‘olau Hui‘ia Church, Anahola, with visitation at 10 a.m. followed by service at noon.

Abraham Machado Sr.

Abraham Machado Sr. passed away on June 16, 2022, at the age of 92. He was born on June 18, 1929, on Kaua‘i. He was a retired welder with Lihu‘e Plantation and Korean War veteran.

He was preceded in death by parents Manuel and Cynthia Machado, wife Helen Machado and brother Douglas Machado.

He is survived by sons Abraham (Linda) Machado Jr. and Darren (Raquel) Machado, daughters Joann (Lowell) Kane and Blanche (Gilmore) Claonan, and two grandchildren.

His celebration of life is at St. Catherine Church in Kapa‘a Saturday, July 16, with visitation from 9 a.m., services at 9:30 a.m. and burial at 1 p.m. at the Hanapepe Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery.

Miyoshi ‘Boxer’ Matsuda

Miyoshi “Boxer” Matsuda passed away on June 22, 2022, at the age of 93, in Waimea, at the Kaua‘i Care Center. He was born on Dec. 25, 1928, in Makaweli. He retired as a harvesting superintendent at Olokele Sugar Co. For many years he coached youth baseball, played for the Makaweli Indians AJA baseball team and the Kaumakani Rookies Senior softball team.

He was preceded in death by daughter Colleen Mie Yamase.

He is survived by wife Madeline Gushiken Matsuda, daughters Valerie (Les) Matsumoto, Renee (Daniel) Kanekuni, son-in-law Brian Yamase, grandchildren Davin (Roxanne) Yamase, Scott Yamase, Troy (Shawna) Yamase, Liane Nakamura, Sara (Andrew) Marks, Kai Kanekuni and Chase Kanekuni, nine great-grandchildren, sisters Nan Oyakawa and Miki Nishikawa, brother Ike (Yoshi) Matsuda, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private service will be held at a later date. The family graciously requests no koden (monetary gifts) and welcomes flowers.

Duane Allen Girard

Duane Allen Girard passed away on June 22, 2022, in Lihu‘e, at the age of 60. He was born on Aug. 19, 1961, in Norway. He was self employed with Girard Quality Cleaners.

He is survived by wife Rosemelia Battulayan Girard, sons Damien Girard of Lihu‘e, Travis Girard of Lihu‘e, Nicholas Girard of Lihu‘e, daughter Tiffany Girard of Lihu‘e, parents Raymond and Alice Girard of Texas, brother Paul Girard of Honolulu, sisters Ann (Mike) Pawly of Texas, Laurie (Brad) Ingoes of Idaho, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service is Saturday, July 9, at the Koloa Church Assembly of God, the white church next to Koloa School, with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. and celebration of life at 11 a.m. The family requests aloha attire and welcomes flowers.

Mary Ordinario Navalta

Mary Ordinario Navalta passed away on June 24, 2022, at home at the age of 74. She was born on April 10, 1948, in the Philippines.

She was preceded in death by husband Maximo Navalta, parents Richardo and Catalina Ordinario and brother Modesto Odinario.

She is survived by daughters Desiree (Chris) James of Florida, Mailerose (Robert) Welsh of Kaua‘i, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, brothers Tino (Lily) Odinario of the Philippines, Benny Ordinario of the Philippines, Joaquin (Lorna) Ordinario of the Philippines, sisters Julie (Pepito) Ibay of Canada, Senyang Navalta of the Philippines, Paring Ordinario of Canada, Arlene (Dan) Rodelas of the United Kingdom and Alfreda Ordinario of Canada, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service is at Garden Island Mortuary on Thursday, July 7, with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. and a celebration of life at 11 a.m. The family requests aloha attire.

Anson Gunji Fujimoto

Anson Gunji Fujimoto passed away on June 23, 2022, in Lihu‘e, at the age of 41. He was born on Feb. 18, 1981, in Waimea. He was a caregiver.

He was preceded in death by grandparents Basilio and Esperanza Cabacungan Funtanilla, Robert G. and Hatsumi Akiyama Fujimoto, nephew Cayd Fujimoto, uncle David G. Fujimoto, and aunts Kathleen Kure and Eileen Powell.

He is survived by parents Robert and Toni Funtanilla Fujimoto of Hanapepe, brothers Craig Fujimoto of Hanapepe, twin Mason Fujimoto of Hanapepe, uncle Franklin (Stephanie) Funtanilla of ‘Ele‘ele, aunts Cora Fujimoto of Torrance, California, Colleen Pantohan of Makaweli and Peggy (Leland) Sun of Burbank, California, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service is Saturday, July 9, at Garden Island Mortuary, with visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. and celebration of life at 3 p.m.
