Edmundo G. Reyes

Edmundo G. Reyes passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024, in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i, at the age of 57 years old. He was born on May 10, 1966, in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i.

He is preceded in death by his father Bernardo Reyes Sr., nephew Brandon Hedgeman, niece Sarai Ann Reyes and brother-in-law Aliivaa Valaau.

Edmundo is survived by his sons Justin-Troy (Yajaira Serratos) Reyes of Ewa Beach, Hawai‘i, Andrew-James Reyes of Ewa Beach, Hawai‘i, grandchildren Anthony Soto, Eliana Reyes, mother Patricia Reyes of Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i, brother Bernardo (Eliros) Reyes Jr. of Puhi, Kaua‘i, sisters Luisita Valaau of Honolulu, Hawai‘i, Clarissa (Virgilio Bautista Jr.) Reyes of Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins

Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 8 to 10 a.m. A Mass will begin at 10 a.m. at the St. Catherine Catholic Church in Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i. Burial to follow at the St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Kealia, Kaua‘i. Family suggests that aloha attire to be worn, with colors of shade of blue or navy blue, and flowers are welcome.

Garden Island Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Borita ‘Grandma Bo’ Becker

Borita “Grandma Bo” Becker, of Kalaheo, Kaua‘i, went home to be with the Lord peacefully surrounded with love and family on April 12, 2024, at her home at the age of 90.

Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, on Jan. 8, 1934. She was a retired medical transcriptionist from USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, California. A former President of Southern California Chapter of A.A.M.T. Grandma Bo will be most remembered for her generous spirit and her kind loving soul along with her beautiful big smile. Her presence on this earth will be truly missed by all. Until we meet again fly with the angels Grandma Bo.

She was preceded in death by husbands Charles “Red” Rider and Richard “Papa Ritchie” Becker, parents Henry and Lucille Frilot, daughter Annette Vallow, brother Francois “Frenchy” (Jewell Patton) Frilot, sister Rose Mary (Chuck) Andreu, brothers-in-law Ted Schultz, and Al Chachere.

She is survived by sons David (Janice) Rider, Larry (Debbie) Rider, Gary (Teri) Rider, Michael “Mike” (Betty) Rider, Joseph “Joe” (Tuyet) Rider, daughters Dianne Rider, Tricia (Kaipo) Blake, sisters Elsie Chachere, Helen Schultz, brothers James “Jim” Frilot, Ronald “Ron” (Karen) Frilot, grandchildren Steven Rider, Amy (Jeremy) Johnson, Shannon (Shane) Jackson, Nathan Rider, Justin Rider, Lori (Matt) Calvert, Cole (Meagan) Rider, Lucas (Adrienne) Rider, Jessica (Kevin), David (Alex) Rider, Daniel(Jaime) Rider, Fouad (Kayla) Rider, Bree Kanoe Blake, Blythe Kahokulea Blake, great-grandchildren Davin, Maleah, Ainsley, Holden, Nici, Alexis, Chloe, Keana,Aubrey, Lucky, Yvesie-Plum, Noah, Owen, August, Bloom, Mina,Tristan, Jeremiah, Judah, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A celebration of life is Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kalaheo. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. followed by Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m.

For ‘ohana in California at Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

Walter ‘Freckles’ James Smith Jr.

Walter “Freckles” James Smith Jr. of Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i, passed away on April 19, 2024, at his home at the age of 89. Walter was born in Hawai‘i on Nov. 22, 1934. He was the President for Smiths Motor Boat Service Inc.

He was preceded in death by parents Walter and Emily Smith Sr., son Kahanu Smith, sisters Charlotte Kaui, Pelma Larsen, Grace Apana and brother Malcom Smith.

Walter is survived by his wife Mokihana Smith, sons Kamika Smith, Kaleo (Stacie) Smith, 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Smith’s Tropical Paradise on the Wailua River on Saturday, May 18, 2024. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. with services to follow.

Karen Higa

Karen Higa of Lihu‘e passed away on April 1, 2024, at the age of 90. She was born on April 10, 1933, in Kokomo, Maui, Hawai‘i.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Henry Higa, Isaac Higa, sisters Doris Toma, Bernice Isagawa and Mitzi Wilhelm.

Karen is survived by her son Deryck (Toni) Ishimoto of Lihu‘e, daughters Pamela (Miles) Mizukami of ‘Ele‘ele, Lynn (Gabe) Garcia of Lihu‘e, 4 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, brother Richard Higa of California, sister Jeanette Tengan of Arizona, numerous nieces and nephews.

A private service was held. The family requests no koden (monetary gifts).
