Helene Kimiko Yamagata

Helene Kimiko Yamagata of Kapa‘a passed away on Jan. 23, 2022, at the age of 84, in Lihu‘e. She was born on Oct. 28, 1937, in Waimea. She was a retired public elementary-school teacher.

She was preceded in death by husband Philip Mitsuru Yamagata, parents Kiitchi and Michie Yamashiro, sister Dorothy (Hannah) Yamagata and in-laws Mark Fewel, Ronald Yamagata and Hideo and Edith Oride.

She is survived by son Randy K. Yamagata of Kapa‘a, daughter Jeri L. Yamagata of Kapa‘a, sisters Ann (Dr. Michael) Suzuki of Maui and Gail Fewel of California, sisters-in-law Nancy Unemori (Fat – deceased) of Moloka‘i, Janet (Isamu) Yoshishige of Kaua‘i, Leatrice Tanaka of Kaua‘i and Janet Yamagata of O‘ahu, and numerous aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her service is Saturday, March 26, at Garden Island Mortuary, with a walk-thru visitation from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. followed by a celebration of life at 11:30 a.m. The family requests casual attire and that flowers be omitted. Due to COVID-19, social distancing and masks are required.

Garden Island Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Pedro ‘Pete’ Costales

Pedro “Pete” Costales, of Kekaha, passed away on Feb. 11, 2022, at the age of 97, at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital. He was born on Jan. 12, 1925, in Magsingal, Ilocos Sur, Philippines.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a Korean War veteran. He retired as a heavy equipment mechanic for Kekaha Sugar Company.

He was preceded in death by parents Segundo and Genoviva Costales and brother Jose Costales Sr.

He is survived by wife Ceferina Costales, daughters Marleen (Keith) Ruiz and Leilani (Kevin) Suga, sons Jimmy (Uilani) Costales and Christopher (Diana) Costales, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may visit with the family Thursday, March 3, at St. Theresa Church in Kekaha, with visitation at 10 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 11:30 a.m. followed by burial at 1 p.m. at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. Due to COVID-19, social distancing and masks are required.

Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Gerald A. LaSalle

Gerald A. LaSalle, 74, of Princeville, passed away at home on Feb. 6, 2022. He was born in California on Oct. 5, 1947, and was a sergeant with the U.S. Army and a Vietnam veteran.

He is survived by brothers Michael LaSalle and Richard LaSalle, sister Michele Woods, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A celebration of life is Saturday, Feb. 26, at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe, beginning at 11 a.m.

Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens &Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ann T. Yotsuda

Ann T. Yotsuda passed away on Jan. 14, 2022, at the age of 84, at Wilcox Medical Center. She was born on April 24, 1937, in Mountain View, Hawai‘i Island. She was a retired telephone operator with Hawaiian Telephone Company.

She was preceded in death by parents Kiyoshi and Misao Tsuzaki, brother Stanley Tsuzaki and husband Masao Yotsuda.

She is survived by sister Eiko Amy Adam and brothers Hiroshi (Patricia) Tsuzaki and Steven (Lucy) Tsuzaki.

Her celebration of life was private.
