Marie Augusto
Marie Augusto, lovingly known as Mary, went on to life in heaven on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Born in Valley House, Kealia, on March 4, 1923, Mary lived a full life for 96 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband Cesar; her parents John and Mary Arruda; sisters, Agnes Shea, Helen Christiansen; brothers Ernest and Manuel Arruda.
Mary is survived by brother John Arruda; sisters, Rosie Pimental, Dora Sugai. She is also survived by son Wayne Augusto; daughters, Kathleen Asuncion, Susie Gusman, Theresa Augusto. Mary was blessed with six grandchildren, Michelle Saia, Danette Aban, Stanford (Chantel) Aban, Don (Jody) Gusman, Rhonda (John) Cabello, Randal (Richel) Gusman; twelve great-grandchildren, Andrew (Tasha) Saia, Tiane (Latu) Lao, Ashley, Randy Teves-Aban, Kala, Annie-Rose Maderia, Stanford Jr. Aban, Kolten Gusman, Noah, Jonah, Elisha Cabello’s, Reginald McFadden; four great-great-grandchildren, Kaya, Tu’ipulotu, Li’i, and Tosh Saia’s.
She love picking opihi, fishing, gardening and cooking. Her favorite activities were those that centered around family. Her love for God was evident in how she lived her life and how she encouraged others to live. She was known for her opu huli massage giftings and other natural healings remedies. Her life was impactful and selfness. She will be truly missed.
Her celebration of life will be held on Dec. 28, 2019, at St. Catherine Church. Visitation at 8 a.m., Eulogy at 9:30 a.m., Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at St. Catherine Cemetery.

Ryder Keolaokekai Kaui
Ryder Keolaokekai Kaui was born on Jan. 26, 2003, at Wilcox Hospital in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i. Ryder was a North Shore Boy raised his whole life in Wai‘oli and will be forever loved.
Known for being fearless, loving, kind, affectionate and radical. Ryder’s greatest passion was the sport of Motocross in which he brought boundless energy, focus, speed and talent. He loved his family, friends and his community. Ryder was a bringer of smiles and laughter, a dodger of birds, a partner and friend and a catcher of air.
No words can truly describe his many layers of awesomeness. Ryder’s upbringing allowed him to be a valuable asset and beloved member as first a student then a intern at Waipa Community Foundation. He also worked at his family’s small business in Hanalei, attended Kapa‘a High School and was a member of the Club Moto Kaua‘i for many years.
On Nov. 23, 2019, Ryder was greeted at heavens gates by his pop pop George Bub Yarberry of Hanalei. His pop pop raised him alongside his beloved mother Nina Yarberry and his ama Vicky Yarberry.
Ryder is also survived by his two hanai sisters Leilani Weber and Wailana Longley-Ka`aumoana; his hanai brother Wailau Longley-Ka‘aumoana; his aunty Mona Yarberry; cousins, Hunter and Reef Ewald; Uncle Jett Yarberry; his father Ryan Kaui and the Kaui ‘ohana of Keapana as well as his entire community and ‘ohana who will continue to be warmed by his light.
A celebration of Ryder’s life will be held at Wai‘oli Beach Park on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at 11 a.m. with visitation and a service with lunch and music to follow.
Karen Anne Liberman
Karen Anne Liberman, 77, of Kapaia, passed away at home on Dec. 19, 2019. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, on Feb. 6, 1942, and was a licensed hair stylist and massage therapist.
Karen was a Beverly Hills Hair Stylist from 1964 to 1976 where she also modeled for T.V commercials and magazines. She styled hair and makeup for movies and actors including Richard Dryfuss in Jaws and Anthony Herraras in the Young and the Restless to name a couple. After moving to Kauai in 1976 she opened and operated the “Hair Kare Saloon” in Puhi and “Hair Kare Salon” in the former Hilton Hotel in Lihue while also doing hair and makeup for movies and weddings.
She was active in hiking and dancing and blessed the lives of thousands of friends on Kauai and around the world and was blessed by each of them. She always had a positive mind and loving heart.
Karen is preceded in death by her parents Marion “Ted” and Kay Shanks.
She is survived by her brother Ted (Cathy) Shanks; 2 nephews, Justin Shanks, Troy Shanks; grandnephew Jacob Shanks; grandniece Jenavi Shanks; and her life partner Scott Lever.
A celebration of life will be held in February. Services will be announced at a later date.
Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Nancy Nakasone Blalock
Nancy Nakasone Blalock of Wailua, passed away peacefully on Nov. 6, 2019, at the age of 97. Born Shigeko Nakasone on April 10, 1922, in Wahiawa, she graduated from Leilehua High School and earned a Business degree from the University of Denver.
She devoted her life to the service of others, as a special education teacher in Hawai‘i, mentor in 4-H programs across Hawai‘i, co-founder of the County of Kaua‘i Sunshine Market, longtime member of the Kaua‘i Farm Bureau and Kapa‘a Lions’ Club, and avid supporter of Na Koa (University of Hawai‘i Athletics).
She was preceded in death by her adoring husband of 57 years Jack Blalock; parents Ushii and Matsukichi Nakasone; sisters, Matsue Shimabukuro, Kay Kimiko Nakamura, Jeanette Kinue Matsukawa; brothers, Matsuzen, Masayuki, and Walter Masahiro Nakasone.
She is survived by children, Carol (Abraham) Cummings, Reiko (Dominic) Beralas, John Ty Blalock; grandchildren, who fondly called her “Grandma Ms. B”, Kawailele (Landon) Yamashiro, Michael (Maricel) Cummings, Momi (Chi) Cummings, Nate (Rebecca) Beralas, John (Carmela) Beralas, Kulia and Faith Blalock, Meghann Matsuda; great-grandchildren, Pono, Ava, Elliana, Azariah. Surviving siblings include Nancy’s brothers, Edwin Masanobu (Mary) Nakasone and James (Norma) Nakasone; sister Marian Iha; brother-in-law Joseph Matsukawa; sister-in-law Takako Nakasone.
In accordance with Nancy’s wishes, her services were private.
