Hannah Pakaka Ka‘iwi Noblisse
Hannah Pakaka Ka‘iwi Noblisse passed away on Aug. 4, 2022, at the age of 79.
She was born on Feb. 13, 1943, in Ko‘olaupoko, O‘ahu. She worked as a security manager at Lihu‘e Airport.
She was preceded in death by mother Hannah Racoma (Kapule), father David Kealoha, sister Hirene (Racoma) Chase, and brothers Peter Kealoha, John Kealoha and David Kealoha Jr.
She is survived by daughters Jacqueline (Hoskins) Ornellas, Christina (Hoskins) Aqui, Tonya (Hoskins) and Benny Lagmay, Ronnessa (Noblisse) and Lopaka Searle Jr., and Joy (Noblisse Kawamura) and Ryan Hardwick, sisters Marta Moniz and Mary Blackstad, brother William Racoma Jr., 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life is Saturday, Feb. 18, at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary. Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. with a pa‘ina to follow at the Anahola Hawaiian Homes clubhouse from noon to 4 p.m.

Sarah Joanne Pumphrey Nakashima
Sarah Joanne Pumphrey Nakashima, 85, of Kalaheo, passed away on Dec. 16, 2022. She was the first child born to Ola and Walter Pumphrey in Broseley, Missouri.
In the early 1970s she moved to Kaua‘i from Columbus, Ohio, and began her Hawai‘i teaching career at ‘Ele‘ele School. She held several different positions at various schools and the sate Department of Education Kaua‘i District Office, focusing on student support.
Her career culminated in the development and implementation of the Mokihana Project that brought attention to the needs of children coping with traumatic events like natural disasters. Following her retirement, she melded her educational expertise with her avid love of politics by joining state Sen. Gary Hooser’s staff, providing counsel on education topics.
Regardless of her professional role, she was a steadfast steward of the Hanapepe United Church of Christ as well as other Kaua‘i and state church organizations.
She expressed her love of music through leading the church choir, playing the organ and piano, and lending her voice to the Kaua‘i Chorale. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma and attended regional, national and international gatherings. She loved travelling, and explored many countries and cities to broaden her knowledge and experience new cultures.
She was predeceased by her husband, and is survived by her sister, stepdaughters, a foster son, a brother and sisters-in-law, and several foster grandchildren.
A small service is Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Delta Kappa Gamma, Eta Chapter, c/o Dr. Rebecca Fries, chapter president, 5003 Pu‘uwai Road, Kalaheo, HI 96741.
Sakiko Okihara
Sakiko Okihara, of Kekaha, passed away on Jan. 6, 2023 in Waimea, at the age of 100. She was born on June 13, 1922 in Makaweli. She was a cafeteria manager at Waimea High School and a member of Honpa Hongwanji and Kekaha Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by husband Kiyoichi Okihara, sisters Chieko Nitta and Tokiko Murakami, and brothers Sadamu Okada and James Okada.
She is survived by daughters Amy (Michael) Willman of Michigan and Kate (Scott) Hardwick of Kekaha, grandchildren Forrest (Lisa) Willman, Travis Willman, Laurien Hardwick and Greg Hardwick, great-grandchild Khat Hardwick-Kaohelauli‘i, sister Nobue Watanabe of Kekaha, sisters-in-law Emiko Okada of California and Michiyo Hori of Waimea, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life is at the West Kauai Hongwanji Mission, Waimea Temple, on Sunday, Jan. 29. Visitation is from 2 to 3 p.m. and services at 3 p.m.
The family suggests casual attire and welcomes flowers. The family requests no koden (monetary gifts). Due to COVID-19, masks are required and temperatures will be taken.

Vincent Sa
Vincent Sa, 89, of California, passed away on Dec. 31, 2022, in Santa Clara, California. He was born on March 16, 1933, in Hanama‘ulu. He retired after 36 years as a drywall superintendent. He served in the U.S. National Guard for six years.
He was preceded in death by parents John Sa and Emelia Garcia Sa.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen (Honey) Aipa Sa, sisters Patsy Sa Lopes and Alice Sa Arruda, son Vincent John Sa, daughters Vanessa Sa-Roldan, Darnell (Kenny) Campbell and Desirie (Scott) Hoshi, 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service is Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Santa Clara, California. Viewing begins at 9:30 a.m., service at 10 a.m., and burial to follow at noon.
Jose M. Pigao Jr.
Jose M. Pigao Jr. passed away on Jan. 5, 2023, in Waimea at the age of 87.
He was born on Jan. 22, 1935, in Hawai‘i. He was a veteran of U. S. Marines and a retired sergeant with the Kaua‘i Police Department.
He was preceded in death by parents Jose and Alice Pigao Sr., sister Conchita Pigao, brother Ludivico “Jackie” Pigao, sister-in-law Joanne Pigao and brother-in-law MacArthur Dela Cruz.
He is survived by wife Rosaline Navarro Pigao, sons Dean (Mary) Pigao of Lihu‘e and Dale (Leilin) Pigao of Hanapepe, daughter Josette (Russ Santiago) Corona of Hanapepe, grandchildren Janilani Curammeng, Ashton Ka‘aumoana, Natasha (Matt) Dennis, Jake (Tiana) Corona, Cy (Nikki) Corona, Whitney (Ryan) Moura, Kiana Pigao and Drewan (Skyler Sadora) Pigao, eight great-grandchildren, brothers Donald Pigao of Kekaha and Ronnie (Johanna) Pigao of California, sisters Rosita (Jerry) Sakamoto of Kamuela, Hawai‘i Island, Linda Dela Cruz of Kekaha, Gail (Wayne) Ayudan of Kekaha and Jenny (Rommel) Manansala of O‘ahu, stepmother Luming Yapo of California, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service is Saturday, Jan. 28, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo. Visitation is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a celebration of life. Private inurnment will be at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery. The family suggests casual attire and requests that flowers be omitted.

Salvatore Fred DiLeonardo
Salvatore Fred DiLeonardo, of Moloa‘a, passed away at his residence on Jan. 11, 2023 at the age of 72. He was born on Jan. 22, 1950, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was a general contractor.
He was preceded in death by parents Anthony Charles DiLeonardo and RoseAnita DiLeonardo and sister Rosemarie DiLeonardo Holcomb.
He is survived by wife Jo-Ann DiLeonardo, daughters Ora May DiLeonardo and Mytra (Ryan) Mckeague, brother Anthony Michael DiLeonardo, granddaughters Salina Joy Manibog and Myla Jo Mckeague and pet Pineapple the cat.

Annie “Wehi” K. Hashimoto, of Kilauea, peacefully passed away on Feb. 27, 2022, at the age of 89. She was born on Feb. 1, 1933, in Wainiha. She worked in hospitality and retired from the National Tropical Botanical Garden Limahuli Garden in Ha‘ena.
She was preceded in death by parents Henry and Annie (Chung) Tai Hook, husband Thomas Hashimoto, and sisters Catherine Pfeffer, Eleanor Haumea and Florence Ka‘ona.
She is survived by daughters Taryn (Keli‘i Alapa‘i) Hashimoto, Dancette (Patrick) Green, Kimberly (Ronnie Gorospe) Tai Hook, Thomasine Romas, Valerie Ann Yokotake, Haven (Bert) Dawbarn and Shann (Kelly Boro) Hashimoto, brothers Wilbert “Afuk” (Mieko) Tai Hook and Henry (Rikki) Tai Hook Jr., sisters Travis “Momi” Tubal and Rhona Ann (Aldrino) Hermosura, 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Steve P. Leger, 53, of Anahola, passed away on Jan. 11, 2023, in Lihu‘e. He was born on Jan. 17, 1969. He was a cement finisher.
He was preceded in death by mother Katauna Lolita Toa, wife Ralphine Leger, brother Ray Leger, daughter Maile Leger and sister Madeline Toa.

William Bruce Marston
William Bruce Marston, longtime Princeville resident, passed on Dec. 14, 2022.
Born on May 5, 1935 in Pasadena, California, Bill attended Pasadena High School and later attended UCLA, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and majored in political science. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1958 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps, stationed at the Fifth Army Headquarters in Chicago.
Following his Army service, he settled in Newport Beach, California, where he pursued a career of sales and marketing for various computer and data communication companies, including Bunker-Ramo Corporation, where he participated in the launch of the NASDAQ stock trading system. In 1991, he founded Clide Systems, which marketed networking systems to major users of IBM computers.
Bill fell in love with Kaua‘i in 1968 when he first visited his uncle Bruce Marston and wife aunt Louise, the founders of the Tahiti Nui bar in Hanalei. Bill and Lori loved Kaua‘i, and returned often to visit friends and family. After his retirement from Clide Systems, he and Lori moved to Princeville in 2001.
During his time on Kaua‘i, Bill volunteered for the Kaua‘i Historical Society and was involved in the production of two DVDs produced by the Kaua‘i Historical Society for the purpose of “Preserving Kauai Backyard Music”. He also served on the board as treasurer of the Kaua‘i Polo Club and the Kane Club Men’s Golf Club. In 2010, he was appointed chair of the Hawai‘i State Elections Commission, where he served until 2018.
Bill is survived by his wife of 43 years, Gloria (Lori), sister Linda Marston of Newport Beach, California, daughter Terry Ann Torres of Newport Beach, California, stepdaughter Teresa Gleason of Maricopa, Arizona, stepson John Gleason of Irvine, California, grandchildren Jesse and Matthew Torres of Newport Beach, California, step-grandchildren Joshua and Aubree Gleason of Maricopa, Arizona, nieces Lynne Nicoletti and Tracey Nicholson of Newport Beach, California, and many Kaua‘i cousins.
Bill’s heart will always be part of his beloved Kaua‘i and its people. He will be truly missed. A celebration of life is pending.
Dianne Marie Melanson
Dianne Marie Melanson, born Feb. 9, 1952, second child of five to Andre and Theresa, passed away on Jan. 10, 2023 at the Hilo Medical Center, Hilo, Hawai‘i Island.
She is survived by her spouse Kirk O’Shaughnessy, daughter Andrea Gray, grandchildren Geordan Gray and Aaryn Gray, great-grandson Emmett Gray, sisters Gloria Davis and Susan (Bart) Bradley, brothers Richard (Nona) Melanson and David Melanson, as well as many beloved in-laws, nephews, nieces and cousins.
While Dianne’s family and friends are grieving her loss from coast to coast, they are choosing to remember her in a way that honors her spirit, and in the way she herself chose to honor the memory of her loved ones who went before her. On her upcoming birthday, Feb. 9, please toss some flowers in the ocean or a special place in her memory.
In a letter of her final wishes, she said that she would love “tons of flowers.”
A celebration of life gathering on Kaua‘i, per her request, will be scheduled at a later date.
Ichiro Chiba
Ichiro Chiba, of ‘Ele‘ele, passed away on Nov. 26, 2022 at the age of 93. He was born on Feb. 26, 1929, in Waimea, and was a retired field survey supervisor for Gay & Robinson.
He was preceded in death by mother Shizuo Chiba, father Ryuichi Chiba, wife Carol M. Chiba, sisters Tamae Chiba Honda, Haruko Chiba Kamishita and Mitsue Chiba Games and brother Yutaka Chiba.
He is survived by sons Melvin I. (Sharon) Chiba of Lihu‘e, Nelson Y. Chiba of Lihu‘e, Wesley R. Chiba of Lihu‘e and Derrick S. Chiba of ‘Ele‘ele, daughter Susan N. Chiba (Charles) Brooks of Kalaheo, grandchildren Bradley I. Chiba, Stacie Chiba Miguel, Sandi M. Chiba Battles, Kevin Chiba, Michelle Chiba Emayo, Lauren N. Chiba and Kimberly K. Jalouise Carlyle-Anderson was born in Port Townsend, Washington on Oct. 7, 1984. She moved to the North Shore of Kaua‘i at the age of 1. She passed away on Jan. 9, 2023.
She was preceded in death by parents Douglas Hebron and Thea Carlyle, sister Jessie Monroe, husband Mikala Anderson and aunt Beatrice Hebron Bullock.
She is survived by hanai parents James and Julie Monroe, siblings Jake Monroe, Jenna (Kysen Lopez) Monroe, aunts and uncle Bob (Becky) Carlyle and Julia Turner, hanai daughter Tiana Simpson, nieces and nephews Keenan Hebron-Woodward, Ikaika Hebron-Woodward, Junior Fernandez, Rachel (Lionel) Fernandez, Brandon Price, Kainoa Price, Raja Counts, Kymani Counts, Keahi Lopez, Jessie Lopez and Jayda Lopez, grand nieces Kaileia Hebron-Woodward and Ailana Hebron-Woodward, cousins Jacob Carlyle and Jesse Carlyle, dearly beloved friends Thad Jenkins and Jenna Kerr, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Rudy Cabalteja, 86, of Lihu‘e, passed away on Jan. 15, 2023. He was born in Alcala, Pangasinan, Philippines, on April 29, 1936, and retired as a maintenance worker at Westin Kaua‘i.
He was preceded in death by parents Federico Cabalteja and Basilia Cabalteja Corrales and father-in-law Victoriano Guzman.
Rudy is survived by wife Medina Cabalteja, son Bryson Dominic Cabalteja, daughters Marlene Cabalteja McLaughlin and Felina (Chito) Cabalteja Garduque, sister Rose (Tom) Hedeen, grandchildren Chino Cabalteja, Ph.D., Katherine McLaughlin and Cristina McLaughlin, first cousin Carolina Cacatian Mapue, mother-in-law Ester Guzman, niece Ma. Theresa Pascua, sister-in-law Tessie Isip, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
