What a year! Practicing living for right now

Did you notice that every time we approach the end of a year we start to say how fast the year has passed? We often don’t even pay attention to what really happened as most of us live just for the one day that’s in front of us, which means that we are living mainly in the future. I think this is perfectly fine, and necessary too. Although, when we become too attached to what we need to do tomorrow we tend to miss right now, which is really only a very brief moment.

Probably that’s the reason why we don’t understand how precious our time is, so when the year is nearing its end we start to think how quickly time flies. Of course I do exactly the same. I also try to remind myself and keep practicing living for right now. This is absolutely the hardest thing to do, especially with so many distractions around us.

This year was very different than other years. Or was it really? Maybe we just gave so much attention to the negativity that is going on around us, even though every year negativity was happening every day in many other forms.

But maybe we really don’t pay attention because things that are happening far away do not seem to affect our life directly, or even indirectly? Of course, there are wonderful things and heartbreaking things happening around world, but how much empathy can we really feel for others far away? What we can do is to focus on our own life so that we can have the most positive impact on our direct surroundings, which is all that we can really reach.

So what we can do better for the next year? I think we need ask ourselves what we can learn from this year. We are probably all sure that we can not predict what will happen, in the same way that we could not predict what was going to happen this year, so we need to live fully each day and in each moment. Yes, we certainly need to think about the next day, next month, or next year and plan well, but we should not miss right now.

I have found the best way for me is to repeat every day what makes me happy, and to learn something new every day, even if it’s something really, really small.

For example, to read something every day, even if it is only a couple of pages. Or, my personal favorite, to listen to audiobooks when I’m walking or running or doing housework. We can still improve ourselves no matter where we are or what education level we have, it really doesn’t matter, we always have space to improve which is critical to grow mentally as well as physically. We can just try to be better every day and in every way, to make 2021 the best year ever.
